The college experience is about much more than just writing assignments and doing exams, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, have fun, and grow and develop as a person.
Most people go through a stage of feeling alone or isolated in college, but there are lots of ways you can meet new people, and make a new network of friends.
Join a Society
Society life is a great aspect of college
because it’s an easy way to find people who share a common interest with you. There are societies for all types of different things, from debating to juggling, jazz to LGBT issues, there’s something to suit everyone. Although most societies actively try to sign up members during Fresher’s Week, you can joining a society at any time, in any year of college.
Join a Sports Club
Similarly to societies, sport clubs are a great way to meet people who share a similar interest to you, or for you to try something new! Don’t be intimidated if you are worries you aren’t the best at that particular sport, student sports clubs are there to cater to all levels of experience and remember, even Olympic athletes had to start somewhere!
Class Events or Nights Out
It can be hard to get to know people during lectures but a good way of bonding with your classmates can be by organizing to do something as a group outside of class time. You could go for lunch together in the canteen, go for a drink in the student bar or go to something relevant to your course (for example if you were a history student, you might suggest a class trip to a local museum). If you don’t feel comfortable organizing something like this yourself, you could try suggesting it to your class representative.
